Message from the STARS
Academy Principal
More than ever before,
families in American society and our community are feeling the strain of
jobs being transient, and more guardians and caregivers, who might prefer
to dedicate their time to raising their children, being forced to seek
work outside the home. Strains on our households, along with the reality
that it is difficult to meet every child’s developmental and learning
needs in a traditional classroom setting, have created the need for better
programs to help students succeed and become more prepared to compete in a
fast paced and increasingly technical world. STARS Academy is just such a
program. We provide teen-aged students in Wagoner Public Schools, who are
capable and willing to be academically challenged, but who have had
difficulty thriving in a traditional classroom setting, with a
student-centered high quality education opportunity. Along with offering a
smaller-group environment for teaching the CORE subjects, STARS offers
unique life
skills instruction and the
opportunity to accelerate learning and credit attainment through
computer-based instruction. It is our goal that many of our students
return to, and excel in, the traditional classrooms prior to their high
school graduation. But in every case, it is our aim to empower our
students with knowledge that will enrich their lives, to make them more
competitive on high-stakes tests (such as state end-of-instruction exams),
to arm them with better skills to cope with the challenges they will face
as adults, and to ensure that they successfully graduate from high school
and enter college or the workforce ready to prosper.
In order to fulfill these
goals, I am pleased to report that I have been given a highly skilled and
motivated staff of teachers and counselors. We are united and ready to
offer academically at-risk students with the education and support they
need to better envision and reach their goals. Though the future may seem
dark or difficult to imagine for some of Wagoner’s students now, STARS
Academy Will Light the Way.
