What is ACE?? **Achieving Classroom Excellence** New mandates from both state and national origins have continued to stretch the boundaries of reaching all students in the classroom. Being the oldest public school district in the state of Oklahoma, Wagoner Public School District has evolved through each transition and trend while growing to serve a diverse student population of approximately 2,500.
As mentioned previously, mandates from both state and national entities have directed the standards to which all educators and students are bound. Some of these are the state mandates beginning with students entering the 9th grade in 2008. In 2005, Oklahoma state legislators signed Senate Bill 982 and subsequently Senate Bill 1792 in 2006. These state statutes have become known as the Achieving Classroom Excellence (ACE) Act of 2005. Additionally, Senate Bill 1769 (2008) provides additional language related to the ACE Act of 2005. The Oklahoma State Department of Education along with the Office of Standards and Curriculum and the Office of Accountability and Assessment were handed the duties of implementing and guiding all Oklahoma public school districts to meet the standards of the ACE initiatives.
For the class of 2012, all students must pass a battery of tests to fulfill the requirements for a standard high school diploma. (Testing Requirements) The problem that must be addressed within each public school district is the number of students that may not pass some or all of the tests. Oklahoma legislators provided assistance for this issue by allocating funds to districts for the purpose of remediation. Currently, funding will be distributed to districts based on the number of seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students who did not score at a satisfactory level in the areas of math and reading on the 2009 Oklahoma Core Curriculum Tests (http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/ACE/default.html). During the 2008-2009 academic year, the allocated funds for ACE remediation were utilized by providing an after-school tutoring program. The ACE Program ran two days per week and provided guidance to students in academics and life skills as well as personal and academic counseling. The ACE program has proven successful to those students and parents who chose to participate.
